Democratic Principles
Statement of Democratic Principles
The programs of, and teaching in our school supports and promotes the principles and practices of Australian democracy, including a commitment that:
- We believe in an accountable, democratically elected government.
- We respect and observe the rule of law, and believe that no person is above the law.
- We believe in equal rights for all before the law, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, sexuality, gender or other attributes.
- We believe not only in the freedom of religion, but also the need to practise tolerance and understanding of others’ beliefs.
- We believe in the value of freedom of speech and freedom of association, but also acknowledge that we have the responsibility not to abuse this freedom.
- We believe in the values of openness and tolerance, and value and respect all members of the School community regardless of background.
At St Mel’s Education Community:
- Our Identity Statement articulates important values for Catholic Education at St Mel’s Catholic Primary School.
- Our Curriculum Scope and Sequence outlines the importance of Civics and Citizenship within the curriculum.
- Source of Life and the Victorian Curriculum form the base for our schools curriculum.
- Our through lines encompass a study of democratic principles through Personalised Learning.
- Our Senior Student Leadership team respectfully raises and lowers the Australian and Aboriginal flags each school day.
- Catholic Values and Values for Australian Schools are displayed in the Administration Area.
- The National Anthem is led by the students at weekly assemblies.
